Description

Creamy layers of potatoes, cheese, and onions create an indulgent dish that feels like a warm hug on a plate.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 4 large potatoes, sliced
  • 2 cups heavy cream
  • 1 cup shredded cheese (cheddar or Gruyère)
  • 1 onion, thinly sliced
  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon fresh thyme or rosemary (optional)

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Grease a baking dish with butter, ensuring that it’s well-coated to prevent sticking and enhance the flavor.
  3. Layer half of the sliced potatoes in the dish, followed by half of the sliced onions. Sprinkle with salt, pepper, and optional herbs for an extra burst of flavor.
  4. Pour half of the heavy cream over the potatoes, letting it seep into the layers to create that creamy texture.
  5. Add half of the cheese, sprinkling it generously over the cream for melty goodness.
  6. Repeat the layers with the remaining ingredients—more potatoes, onions, cream, and cheese.
  7. Cover the dish with foil and bake for 45 minutes; this steams the potatoes and helps them cook thoroughly.
  8. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes, or until the top is golden and bubbly—a beautiful sight to behold!
  9. Allow to cool for a few minutes before serving, letting the flavors meld together and making it easier to serve.

Notes

Make-ahead option available; leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to three days.
