Ingredients

  • 1 pound shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1 onion, chopped
  • 1 bell pepper, chopped
  • 2 celery stalks, chopped
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 cups chicken broth
  • 1 tablespoon Cajun seasoning
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (optional)
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • Cooked rice for serving
  • Green onions and parsley for garnish

Instructions

  1. Melt the butter in a large skillet over medium heat.
  2. Add the flour, stirring constantly to make a roux; cook for about 5-7 minutes until it turns a light brown color.
  3. Add the chopped onion, bell pepper, and celery and sauté until softened, about 5 minutes.
  4. Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  5. Gradually whisk in the chicken broth, Cajun seasoning, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper.
  6. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 10-15 minutes.
  7. Add the shrimp and simmer until cooked through, about 5 minutes.
  8. Stir in the heavy cream and heat through.
  9. Serve the etouffee over rice and garnish with green onions and parsley.
